Rakushisha (1)

Kyorai Mukai -  Rakushisha

Kyorai Mukai (1651-1704) gave up samurai service at the age 23 and turned to the writing of poetry. He was one of the first disciples of the haiku master Matsuo Basho. Kyorai sought to write poems in which every word was necessary and none could be changed without destroying the poem's meaning.

A tiny thatched roof house Rakushisha surrounded by the grove and rural landscape is the dwelling and grounds where Kyorai led a retired life. He made his home a place for haiku study and composition, where many of most talented haiku poets stayed.
